I am 18 and I have been interested in my family history for some time. My grandpa on my mom's side is from the clan Gunn. Some of my ancestors also come from clan McNeilly and clan Mackay.

My name is Lara (nee Salvage) and my grandmother Irene, now sadly passed on was Robinson. She told me of my ancestral connection with the Gunn clan. I have visited the Gunn clan museum on many occasions in Latheron on my visits to Scotland. My mother, who died in 94 was a Johnson. No wonder I feel so at home in Sutherland.......!

Hello to Julia Ross who, on Wed, 06 Aug 2008, asked for help about visiting the Gunn museum in Latheron, Caithness, Scotland in September 2008. Since I have been there several times and know the people responsible for it, I may be able to help. If you wish, contact me via the website of the Clan Gunn Society of North America - Eastern Canada Branch that is posted under the ¨ Gunn Society & other Links ¨ section of this website. Need info about visiting museum (from America)
I am the daughter of Donald Gunn Ross II, who donated a sword belonging to Captain John Gunn (I believe) to your museum over 20 years ago (my father passed away in 1986). My husband and I are planning a trip to Scotland and would like to visit the museum on or around September 23. I might be the only person in my family to ever be able to do this, and it's only possible because I'm attending the UA (technical writing for software users) conference in Edinburgh September 17, 18, and 19.
I'm looking for someone who can tell me the best way to travel from Edinburgh to Latheron (train, bus, rent a car?), places to stay, and places to see in Caithness in the area of the museum. We will be there only 2 days.
By the way, my family is only related to the Gunn clan by marriage, so I'm not a clan member. Yet, because that sword was always in our home when I was a child, and I was delighted when my father discovered the story behind it and donated the sword, AND because where the museum is located seems like a beautiful and unusual place to see, I'd like to make the effort to get there.
So, any help you or anyone else who cares to communicate with me can provide will be very much appreciated.

Thanks, Julia Ross

My Grandfather was William Stewart Wilson, he immigrated to Canada and married an English girl...Nora E. Rawden. They lived in Vancouver and Victoria BC; raised two children Lawrence Wilson and Valerie Wilson (married name "Barnes") I know little of My Grandfathers history, but I do know that I have a very strong affection for Scots history. Bagpipes give me goosebumps and I love Highland Games! when they says it's in the blood, they aren't kidding, and Blood can be very thick!

I beleive that I could contribute to as well as benefit from this site. I will attempt to determine if indeed Peter is in my family tree. My great Uncle "Gordon Howieson Robson" did a family tree some years ago. I have a "Paper copy" of what he was able to put together. In an ongoing fashion I would like to continue his work although I know my cousin is doing the same. Any assistence whatsoever would be greatly appreciated, even if it is just the suport of those who have done the same research in the way of a "Hoorah don't give up" Yours Wayne

For Paul S. Robinson. I had a jeweler look at the medallion in February this year. It had many 'hallmarks' on the back, one of them is a Thistle. Without looking, I believe there are four, maybe five hallmarks. Apparently, it's a very old piece. Unfortunately, the tip of the sword was long gone when I inherited this. I'm so happy to have found the connection to the clan. Linn Madsen, Fri, 06 Jun 2008 16:08

My father, James A Wilson informed me that we are part of the Gunn Clan. A litle quirk of our family line, is that the first male born into each succesive generation is names "James". SANDISONS! I'm looking for any relatives who may be lurking out there! My grandfather, JOHN EDWARD ROSS (1916-2004) had told me his mother's name was MARGARET SANDISON. Margaret married JOHN ROSS; they lived in Ward 3, Seattle, Washington. My grandfather's older sister was MARY ROSS WEST. MARGARET is listed in the 1910 census, living with her brothers, RICHARD and JAMES SANDISON, in the home of the HUSTIS STEWART family, also in Ward 3, Seattle, WA. The Sandisons emigrated to the States from Canada, where they had lived for a few years after emigrating from Scotland. That's about all I have. We used to go to the Scottish Highland Gmaes in North Carolina and Georgia when I was growing up, and now that I am starting my own family I want to keep the tradition and make sure that we know our heritage and ancestry. Thanks for having a wonderful place to find more about our lineage.

My name is Thomas James Johnson 6th. I just would like to say Hello to all the Johnson and the Gunns out there. I was in Germany in the Canadian Military and I had my surname searched by the Highland Heights Ltd. I found out and learned that I came from the Gunn Clan of Scotland. I have my family crest on my wall and am very proud of it. God Bless Us All.

My last name is a sept of Gunn. It might have been originally Gallie. My family spells it as Gailey. Perhaps much to the horror of some long ago ancestors, the main part of my other Scottish heritage is Keith! Somehow I imagine ancient ancestors rolling over in their graves ;) at the concept of Gunn-Keith cross descendents 7 centuries beyonf their time. Dad is a Gunn, Mom, who was a Falconer, is a Keith! My gradnparents were more Gunns, more Keiths, and Morrisons and Davidsons

I am a Gunn by birth, name was "Guinn" I even had found a direct geneological line from me all the way to Guinn, the second son of Olaf in the 12th century, however I married a Bragg, I can't for the life of me find a clann I would be associated with for my husbands family. From how I remember this works, when you get married you then take on loyalty to your husbands clann, how do I proudly were his tartan if I can't even find a clann. If I don't find a clann to which he belongs then do I continue to wear my fathers tartan. (not that that would bother me, I am rather proud of our rather intimidating viking history!! I used to "bragg" (pun intended) about it all the time. Anyway, if anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it. I have even tried the wikipedia and all I get is famous people with the same name (it's a very common name supposedly anglo-saxon, english roots) please e-mail me confused scottish-irish-prussian-english-swedish-American in virginia

I am working on my family tree & there is a Wilson there. He was a second husband for my great-great-grandmother. They seem to have had at least one child maybe more but unknown as yet. It is said that he was from Ireland but I figure through the years that may or may not be known to any decendents. They, Henry Wilson & Mary Ann Gardner, were married about 1859, give or take, in Leeds, England I believe. I figure I should contact different clans for help with different names as one never knows. I am grateful for any help even if a tip to head me in the right direction. Thank-you. Regards

I am not sure who to ask this of so I will start here. On my mothers side she goes back to the Gunn Clan. I have been reading about the Knights Templar and there is a mention of a Sir James Gunn who was affiliated with the Templar. It also appears in the crest that the sword resembles a Templar sword. Is this a far fetched idea that there may be a connection? Could some one guide me in the right direction? Thanks.

I inherited a badge from my mother. Her father had it made for her and told her it was our family crest. I was looking up the words, "AUT PAX AUT BELLUM" and found your site. My grandfather's name was Hobson Jennings Willis 1900 - 1975, probably from his father Henry Thomas Willis from Mississippi. I didn't find "Willis" in your Septs, but did find "Wills". Interesting history - I always thought Hobson was Irish!? And I thought the crest/badge was from some wild Irish street gang in New York. Americans.

Dear friends, I see here several comments relating to the McAmis/McCamish family, specifically three brothers who manifested in Virginia in the 1770s and then moved to Tennessee. A man compiled several unsourced book about them. While a great starting place, unsourced genealogy is fairy lore. Unfortunately he also propagated the notion that these men descend from Clan Gunn. Alas, that does not appear likely. We did some DNA testing. The three brothers descend from Nial of the Nine Hostages or rather are R1b1c7. A McCOMISH in Belfast (also believed he was Clann Gunn and traveled to Scotland to research this) is also R1b1c7 though not sharing a common ancestor with the 3 brothers in 7 generations. The DNA of the 3 brothers shows that they are actually very important. They are very closely related to the two main O'Neill lines: O'Doherty and O'Cathain (O'Kane). Consequently we've gotten a lot of interest from geneticists in Dublin. We work with the Ulster DNA project. To date we have been unable to find any R1b1c7 in Clann Gunn's DNA projects. It tends to be spread thinly across Scotland, indicating (the experts suspect) a very early salting by younger sons. Several Scots clans are proven to descend from the O'Neills but....not Clann Gunn. If you are R1b1c7 and can actually prove your ancestors were from Perthshire and the adjoining traditional clan Gunn territories, we'd love to hear from you.....maybe it can yet be proven they could be Clann Gunn. Linda Merle (Admin McAmis DNA project)

Hello,
My name is Robert Willis I am a Marine currently stationed in Reno Nevada. I have been researching my ancestors which has led me back to Scotland. I have researched the area and found that the surname Willis is a Norman surname With other spellings of, Wilson- Willison, Willes and more. All spelling's all originate back to Will the Crowner Gunn. I have been told that my ancestors probably fell under the Gunn Clann for protection and gathering of forces in the highlands. Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated. I am currently trying to locate the proper clann or family ties to properly represent my family and any clann affiliations, because I am currently beginning my piping lessons and want to wear the proper tartan. Thanks,

I know he had a brother Carl, but that is all I can remember! Anybody related out there that is reading this? And does anyone know how we got to America!

I just found out I'm Scottish, explains why I've always loved the bagpipes and other Socttish and Irish folk lore and such. I am trying to find out how my family (Keene and Wyllie) connect to Clan Gunn, my Aunt took us back to George Little of Unicorn St. London Eng, came to USA in 1640, wife Alice Poor of England. How do I go back further, I am soooo excited. Hopefully we'll be going to Nova Scotia in June '08, I'll probably never be able to afford to go to Scotland. Have started going to the Highland Games wherever I can, Thank you.

In my neighborhood having a sense of heritage and ancestry is one of those things that you embrace as it gives you a sense of individuality and pride. Having knowledge of my Gaelic ancestry gives me a nice warm feeling in a town where good Scottish and Irish kids are vastly outnumbered by people of Polish, Italian and Mexican extraction. Don't get me wrong- I have nothing against my neighbors- but it feels good to carry the knowledge that my family came from a clan of warriors. Soon, when I get the money, I'll buy our clans kilt and sport it in my town with pride. I think this site is great- keep up the good work. Thank you.

I descend from early settlers of Virginia on all except maybe the Wilson line. The oldest Wilson ancestor I know for sure is my gr gr grandfather Morgan J. Wilson (sometimes spelled Willson) born in 1813. He lived Henry County, Virginia. Gr grandfather was William Henderson Wilson (1849-1928) who established the farm we still own in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Grandfather was William Hassell Wilson Jr (they cheated a bit on the middle name) (1889-1941). My father was William Hassell Wilson III (1925-1992). Most of the family are blonde or red haired as children with hair growing darker with age. Some are red haired for life. Most are strongly built men. Some well over 6' tall. I'm entirely sure if I actually belong to the Gunn Clan, because I haven't done extensive research. But, from what I can find, it would appear with my small Scottish ancestory, the Wilson name is most likely linked to the Gunn Clan. It's a belief I hold pretty close to my heart, and I'm damn proud of it.

One of the problems with clans today that in Scotland the idea of clans has all but vanished, and the definition of a clan is very diffuse. Most clan organisations are in the USA and work on a surname basis; but surnames often do not define your origins.

My last name is Johnson, and I am a descendent of the clan Gunn. There is quite a few of us Johnson's in North America. Most of us we call ourselves Acadians first, because of our recent history and how we started in Canada. But we are also of Scottish descent, through William Johnson, born around 1680 and married a french girl in Acadia, Elizabeth Corporon. William was born in the Highlands of Northeastern Scotland. I don't have too much info. on him, I don't know who his parents were. I do have all the names going back to Yngvii Tyrkjaking straight down to Ragnhild who married Guinn or Gunni, second son of Olaf 11, called the The Black. I also have Guinn lineage going back to Eystein the Fart. I have names going down to George Crowner of Caithness and John who was the third son of George (from whom the surname of Johnson is derived) But after this there is eight generations unrecorded. This is where I'm stuck, for now. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mary

I was born in Dallas TX, I'v been almost 40 years married to Ed Broadfield, have 2 adult children- Lara and Jonathan. Currently Ed and I live in Pennsylvania. My dad, Harold Dale Gunn, from Dallas TX originally, died in the late 1980s, and worked with his cousins to clarify the family geneology. Despite the clan mantra 'aux pax, aux bellum', I'm a committed peace activist... to keep bellum from happening. :o)

I am he youngest in my family, my sister, Barbara Ann and my brother, Peter Alexander, were born in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire ( now part of Cleveland) in he north-east of England. Our father, Kenneth William, was born in 1922 and he had one brother named Joseph. We know that his father's family spent some time in Sunderland, further north, but his father, whose name we believe was William, died in 1939, well before any of us were born - a result of long-term effects of mustard gas exposure during World War 1. This is all I, personally, know about my father's family, other than family legend which says that our branch left - or were forced from - the Highlands & moved south looking for work. Pausing awhile in Sunderland, they moved on, to beautiful Yorkshire. Sketchy though it is, if anyone can add to this, I'd be grateful and very interested.
